The idea of an Italian restaurant in Manhattan is one that creates a kind of perfect place in the imagination. In its platonic ideal, this is the place of dreams, where everything anyone could want is there for an evening that extends into eternity. The music is just right, and the company is romantic, witty, and flirty beyond abandon. The food is impossibly good, and there is no telling where the night will go.
There are many places like this all over the city, and it would take a lifetime to try them all. Perhaps it would be worth a lifetime, because at the end of the 80 or so years, it’s hard to imagine not being enormously happy. And one of the great things about New York City is that there are plenty of exercise clubs to work off too much pasta and butter. If one is so inclined.
It might be necessary to find a place to work out after an evening at Ennio and Michael’s , where they serve it up in a delightful old school Italian style. Perfectly placed in the Village on La Guardia place, this is a space where one can escape from the noise of the city and get into the serious business of eating.
It’s reputed to have one of the best recipes for linguini with clam sauce in the city, but it’s best to save opinions until the end of another 80 years, when all the Italian places have been thoroughly researched.
For now, this is as good a place to start as any. It’s a wonderful night out, enjoying time on the city while staying at one of the five star hotels Manhattan offers. There may be music in the air, and it might be the restaurant, or it might be coming from the heart, playing the sweet sounds of falling in love.
