Being a sports freak and traveling to Chennai on a business trip, I needed to know what the sports were in India and if Chennai had any sports for me to go to and watch during my down time. I was pleasantly surprised to find the Indian culture has tons of sports for me to pick from.
Cricket is the most popular sport in Chennai. The M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, formerly known as Madras Cricket Club , is the oldest Cricket stadium and was build in 1916. Chidambaram seats up to 50,000 and is the home of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. There is another Cricket venue called The Chemplast Cricket Ground not too far from any Luxury Hotels Chennai . Also, close by is the SDAT Tennis Stadium; seating about 6,000 spectators and has five synthetic surface courts. The stadium also hosts India’s only ATP event, the Chennai Open. India is proud of it’s professional tennis players such as Vijay Amritraj, Mahesh Bhupathi, and Ramesh Krishanan.
There’s even a Hockey League in Chennai, the team, Chennai Veeran is plays at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium and seats around 4000 hockey enthusiasts. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium seats 40,000 and hosts soccer and other athletic competitions. The complex houses a multi-purpose indoor stadium with a seating capacity of 8000 and hosts various competitions including Volleyball, Basketball and even Table Tennis.
Horse Racing is extremely popular not only with the native Chennai people, but with the thousands of tourist travelling through the city. The Guindy Rac Cours was established in 1777. Then there’s the Sriperumbudur track for Motor Racing and the Sholavaram track for Motorcycle Racing. In 1867, the Madras Boat Club is at the Basin Bridge and hosts rowing races. And for the true sports enthusiast, Chennai even has three 18-hole golf courses: the Cosmopolitan Club, the Gymkhana Club and the Guindy Links, all established in the late 19th century.
