The Singapore Zoo has many conservation, preservation and educational aspects. It is structured to serve the many diverse animal species as well as the guests, which visit this popular institution. It sponsors many research projects and is environmentally oriented. This and other major city institutions are extremely popular to tourists who stay in one of the 5 star Singapore hotels. It’s extremely beneficial when a vacation package also enriches lives and educates.
The zoo has many research and conservation projects that are both locally and internationally based. Some of the local projects include a field trial of avian influenza vaccine. Because of the increase threat of this virus, the zoo has begun trials on a vaccine with high-risk species. Another local study deals with the estrus cycles in female Asian elephants and anteaters. This study is a collaborative effort with the National University Singapore and is aimed at monitoring the cycles and pregnancy status of these animals. There is also a study geared toward predicting land snail endemism at limestone karsts for conservation priorities. Because the limestone karsts are extremely important to the ecosystem, their conservation and monitoring is essential.
The Singapore Zoo also recognizes its responsibility regarding the conservation of certain endangered animal species. This is accomplished through both breeding programs and educational aspects. The breeding program includes a long list of endangered species and the exchange of certain animals with other qualified zoos for breeding purposes. Some of the animals on the list include the proboscis monkey, white rhino, king cobra, tiger, orangutan and more. The educational elements are integrated into the zoo experience. Some of them are based on the feeding tours and educational material is included in the exhibits. In addition, educational materials are distributed to young students who visit the zoo as part of a class project.
