Reasons to Visit Mumbai

Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is the second largest city in the world. Home to one of the largest seaports on the Arabian Sea, Mumbai forms an island when combined with the surburbain district surrounding the city. It is a multicultural, multi-religious city where East meets West and the influences of the colonial era merge with pre-colonial and modern India.

Traditional bazaars share the city with modern shopping malls. Historical architecture coexists with modern skyscrapers. The cultural heritage of the city encompasses museums, temples and the Bollywood film industry. All these contrasts create an exciting destination and visitors come to the city for the variety of experiences available. Even the choice of lodgings range from private rentals to five star Mumbai hotels, from youth hostels to upscale bed and breakfasts.

Some of the more popular sites to see in Mumbai include the Gateway of India and the Elephanta caves. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalay is a famous museum that used to be called the Prince of Whale Museums. Other cultural attractions include the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Jehangir Art Gallery. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) used to be known as Victoria Terminus. It is one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world and is quickly recovering from the terrorist attacks there in November 1008.

Northwest Mumbai is where you’ll find the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, which is home to some big cats, including panthers, living in natural habitats. It is also the location of the rock-cut temples of Jogeshwari, Mahakali, Mandapeshwar, and Kanheri, which date from the 1st century B.C. to the 5th A.D.
