New York city is the most popular tourist destination in the United States. Visitors are drawn to the city’s numerous landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the World Trade Center Site, and Central Park. New York is perhaps the leading city in the world for art, fashion, diplomacy, finance, theater, dance, and food. One of the easiest ways to get a feel for this vibrant, multicultural city is to look at the five boroughs that make up the city.

Manhattan is probably the most well-known of the five city boroughs. Here is where you’ll find the many skyscrapers that define the New York skyline. It is the financial center of New York and is home to the United Nations, several universities, and the world headquarters of many major corporations, including the major television and cable networks. Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange and a variety of museums and galleries are housed here. Central Park, Madison Square Garden, Greenwich Village, Times Square, and Broadway are all located in Manhattan as is the famous Harlem neighborhood. Manhattan is also home to a number of five star New York hotels, world-famous restaurants, and some of the best shopping and nightlife in the world.

The Bronx is the only borough that is not on an island. If it were an individual city, the Bronx would be one of the ten most populous US cities (along with Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens). However, this borough has managed to preserve extensive parkland. The Bronx Zoo is the largest US metropolitan zoo. It houses over 6000 animals on 265 acres. The New York Yankees call the Bronx home. The Bronx is also the recognized birthplace hip hop culture and rap music.

The most populous borough is Brooklyn, which remained an independent city until 1898. As a former city, Brooklyn maintains its own downtown area and an independent art scene from the rest of New York. This borough is known for its diversity, social, ethnic, and cultural. Brooklyn is the home of New York’s famous brownstone architecture and its various neighborhoods are also distinct. Here you’ll find extensive beachfront, including Coney Island, which is one of the oldest amusement parks in the country.

The largest borough by size is Queens, which also holds the distinction of the most ethnically diverse county in the US. Queens was originaly a collection of Dutch-founded villages and towns. Today it is mostly middle class and residential in nature. It is the home of the New York Mets and the US Open tennis tournament. Both of New York’s major airports, JFK and LaGuardia, are located in Queens.

Staten Island is a more suburban and rural borough. In 1984 the Greenbelt was designated to protect the island’s natural environments. It includes seven individual parks, an undisturbed forest, and around 35 miles of walking trails. The Staten Island Ferry provides stunning views of lower Manhattan, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty, making it one of the most popular New York attractions. The ferry is free and is the only way of reaching Staten Island from Manhattan.

Each is an oasis of green in the exotic city known for its skyscrapers and modern development. The cultural heritage of the city encompasses museums, temples and the Bollywood film industry. All these contrasts create an exciting destination and visitors come to the city for the variety of experiences available. Mallorca is known to English speakers as Majorca. It is the largest and most popular of the Balearic Islands of Spain. The island features wooded hills and mountainous areas, picturesque cliffs and coves, lovely beaches, and stalactite caves. While many visitors are drawn to explore the inner reaches of Mallorca’s landscape and villages, the majority of the millions who visit the island each year flock to the famous coastline.

One of the surprises of Mallorca is its rich and delectable food. According to 2005 records, there are over 2400 restaurants on this island. These offer dishes ranging from local, traditional fare to cuisines from all over the world. Visitors can choose between small bars and fine dining establishments, and everything in between.

Even though Mallorca is a Mediterranean island, it’s important to note that much of the seafood here is imported. Almonds and olives, however, are staples of Mallorcan cuisine due to their abundance on the island. Many local dishes rely on sobrassada, which is a sausage made from pork that is rather spicy. Seafood paella is also a popular dish. Other local favorites include arros brut, which is a saffron rice dish cooked with vegetables, chicken and pork, Frit Mallorquí and Sopes Mallorquines. Ensaimadas are popular for breakfast while dessert options include Gató with almond ice cream.

Whether you stick to the popular tourist destinations or delve inland, the island offers a range of shopping, food, and lodging to suit any tastes and budget. The 5 star hotels on Mallorca reflect the range of environments available, from beach resorts to country hotels. There are also small, private cottages for rent as well as large, tourist resorts.

The largest city of Catalonia is its capital, Barcelona, which is also the second largest city in all of Spain. Located on the Mediterranean coast, Barcelona has a long, rich history and a diverse cultural environment. Founded either in the 3rd century B.C. or four centuries before Rome (depending on which foundation legend you believe), the city is supposedly named after the great Carthage family of Barca. It has been ruled at various times by the Romans, the Moors, and the Visigoths before coming under Spanish Christian rule and, eventually, democracy.

Well known for its architecture, Barcelona is the only city to win the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for architecture, in 1999. Every other winner has been an individual. The metropolis is home to surviving Roman ruins, medieval buildings, and Catalan modernist architecture. Many of the buildings are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The works of renowned architects Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Antoni Gaudí can be found throughout the city. Arguably the most famous is Gaudí’s unfinished church of the Sagrada Família. It was begun in 1882 and is scheduled for completion in 2026. In addition to its architectural wonders, Barcelona has also become known for award-winning industrial design.

For those who prefer a more natural environment, Barcelona features nearly seventy municipal parks, including historic, botantical, and urban parks as well as six forest areas. The largest park, Montjuïc is situated on the mountain of the same name. Other parks include museums, a military citadel, a zoo, a garden maze, and sports and recreation areas. There are also a number of beaches and scenic walks to enjoy. The most famous of the latter is La Rambla, a tree-lined pedestrian boulevard that features street performers, flower stalls, and access to museums, shopping, and other attractions.

Whether coming for the architecture, natural beauty, or rich cultural life, Barcelona is a wonderful experience. Be sure to check out 5 star Barcelona hotels and the world-class restaurants and nightlife as well.

The annual Madras Music Season starts off in December.  It is known as the world’s largest cultural event. Over five weeks, this cultural festival features performances by hundreds of musicians and artists.  Although it began as a month-long celebration of Carnatic music, over the years it has grown to include dance, drama, and some non-Carnatic art forms.

Pongal is the most important of Chennai’s festivals. A traditional harvest festival, Pongal has been celebrated for at least 1000 years. The word means “boiling over or spill over.” For four days, the prosperity of the harvest is celebrated by thanking the sun, the rain, and farm animals.  In Chennai, the celebration is not limited to the Tamil, but enjoyed by people of all faiths.

January finds the city celebrating the Chennai Sangamam as part of Pongal. This is an annual arts festival which showcases various arts of Tamil Nadu. Spread over eight days, Chennai Sangamam includes classical Indian music and folk forms such as mayilattam, periya melam, kokali attam, and thappattam. It also encompasses performances by school children, folk drummers, and theater productions.
